Fall is my favorite season. The milder temperatures provide much needed relief from the sweltering Georgia summer days and seeing the changing colors of the leaves always gets me excited for the upcoming holiday season. I have visions of candy corn (don’t judge me!), Thanksgiving dinner, and Christmas trees at the first sign of falling leaves. Although Fall comes around the same time every year, I always find myself caught off guard with one aspect of the changing season – my wardrobe. In Georgia, I can wear tank tops and flip flops one week and be desperately searching for my long sleeve shirts and boots the next week. It always takes me a few weeks to make the adjustment. Sandals or boots? T-shirts or cardigans? It’s a battle I fight with every change of season. Even though I know the season has changed, I still want to wear my shoes and clothes from the last season. Isn’t that a lot like life sometimes? Aren’t there times when we know God is moving us into a new season, yet we desperately try and drag everything from the old season into the new? Just like the four seasons of the year, we go through seasons in life. Just like the four seasons, our life seasons have purpose and a designated duration. No matter what season we are in currently, there are things that we cannot and should not take into the next. Some relationships, places, habits, attitudes, thought patterns, and self-limiting beliefs need to be left behind. They don’t fit in the new season. They have become uncomfortable – like wearing a cashmere sweater in the middle of July! The truth is, most of the time we are aware of when something in our life is past its expiration date. Emotionally, we are attached and just want to hold on a little bit longer. We clench our fists even more tightly to ensure we don’t let go. It’s a true act of faith to trust God in transition and let go of those people places and things that are no longer serving purpose in our life. If it is not helping you grow, mature and move towards your purpose – it’s time to let it go. When we trust Him enough to let go and unclench our fists, He will always give us exactly what we need. And just like a fabulous pair of boots on a crisp fall day, it will always be appropriate for your season! What people, places or things are you ready to leave behind as you move into your new season?
